Summer Session Registration Information

IMPORTANT SUMMER SESSION NOTICE FROM UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICE:

If you were born on or after January 1, 1957, you will be required to provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). In addition, ALL students are required to sign off on having received information on meningitis and indicate whether or not meningitis vaccine has been received.

NOTE: These requirements are mandated by New York State Public Health Law and ALL students must fulfill them before they will be allowed to register for Summer Session classes.

For more information visit http://www2.binghamton.edu/health/new-students/index.html or call University Health Service at (607) 777-2221.

Who May Register for Summer Session

Students currently registered at Binghamton but not scheduled to receive a degree in May 2009, students who have been admitted to Binghamton for the academic year beginning in fall 2009 and those who have been formally admitted to the 2009 Summer Session may register for courses. Individuals not currently enrolled at Binghamton must apply for admission and be admitted to the Summer Session before they can register.

IMPORTANT: Since some courses have enrollment limits, students planning to take them should register as early as possible (on or after March 9th) to avoid being closed out.

All students must confirm their enrollment on the BU Brain. Once you log into BU Brain (http://bubrain.binghamton.edu/), the first page has instructions on how to confirm your enrollment. Instructions are printed in red at the top of the page. Failure to confirm your enrollment will result in cancellation of your course(s) if not completed by a specified date.

How and Where to Register

The summer schedule of classes can be viewed at: http://bubrain.binghamton.edu/schedule.html

Students can register for courses online beginning on March 9th. See the registration information on this website for all important registration dates and deadlines. Questions concerning registration eligibility and procedures should be directed to the Registrar’s Office (SW-119).

If you are currently a Binghamton University student, you can register online via the BU Brain beginning March 9th. If you are a new student, you will need to be admitted and satisfy all health requirements (http://www2.binghamton.edu/health/new-students/index.html) before being allowed to register via the BU Brain.

Additionally, all new students are required to complete an online Student Code of Conduct Acknowledgment (the initial part of the registration process) before being allowed to register for classes.

Instructions on how to register using BU Brain can be found at: http://banner.binghamton.edu/using/entry.cgi?view=2

All payments for summer courses are made online at: http://www.binghamton.edu/studentaccounts/index.htm

Some courses require permission of the instructor or permission of department before you can be registered and are so noted in the Schedule of Classes. You cannot register for these courses online. Instead, you should contact the department to inquire about registering for the course.

If a student wants to try to add a course after the published add deadline, you must complete a Late Add Petition form, get approval signatures from the course instructor and/or the appropriate dean’s office and you will be assessed a Late Add fee. You can obtain a “Late Add Petition” from the advising office of the school offering the course. If the late add is approved, you must take it to the Registrar’s Office for processing. Under no circumstances is credit granted to students that are not properly registered in a course.

Auditors

Students may audit a course with the consent of the instructor. The instructor determines the requirements for participation by auditors. Students who take a course as an auditor may not receive credit for it later unless they retake the course. A student must file a “Course Audit Petition” and be approved to audit any course. Audit forms are obtained in the Registrar’s Office. Completed audit forms must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office by the add deadline for that specific term of Summer Session. Auditors must follow the registration procedures described above and make appropriate tuition and fee payments.

Credit Limits

Students may not register for more than eight credits in either Term I or Term II, excluding physical education credits. The maximum number of credits for which a student may register during the combined terms of the entire Summer Session is 16, excluding physical education credits. Exceptions to these credit limits are few and must be approved by an academic adviser in the appropriate school for undergraduate students, and by the Graduate School for graduate students. All courses in the summer schedule of classes are offered for four credits unless otherwise noted. Full-time status for the entire Summer Session is 12 credits.

Dropping a Course, Withdrawing from a Course or Withdrawing from the University

Students who wish their records to indicate good standing when dropping a course, withdrawing from a course or withdrawing from the University must follow formal drop and withdrawal procedures. Mere absence from class does not constitute due notice of drop or withdrawal. Students who stop attending a course for which they are registered are liable for payment unless the proper drop or withdrawal forms are submitted and approved.

In general, any Summer Session student may drop a course up until the published drop deadline. Students wishing to withdraw from a course should refer to the withdrawal deadline on this website for instructions regarding withdrawal procedures and deadlines. (See Registration Dates and Deadlines).

Students wishing to withdraw from all of their courses for the Summer Session must complete an official University Withdrawal form. These forms can be obtained in the Registrar’s Office (SW-119). Students may withdraw from the University up to the last day of classes for the Summer Session term.

Independent Study, Internships, Thesis and Dissertation Courses

Students enrolling in non-classroom courses such as independent study, thesis and dissertation research, etc., must be registered for these courses by the appropriate dates. Arrangements for registration should be made by contacting the department offering the course. Please refer to the applicable dates and deadlines published on this website. (See Registration Dates and Deadlines).
