Who May Register

Students currently registered at Binghamton but not scheduled to receive a degree in May 2008, students who have been admitted to Binghamton for the academic year beginning in fall 2008 and those who have been formally admitted to the 2008 Summer Session may register for courses. Individuals not currently enrolled at Binghamton or admitted to Binghamton for fall 2008 must apply for admission and be admitted to the Summer Session before they can register.

IMPORTANT: Since some courses have enrollment limits, students planning to take them should pay and register for them as early as possible on or after March 10 to avoid being closed out. You must pay for courses before you can register.

How and Where to Register

Using the online schedule of classes in BUSI (http://busi.binghamton.edu), you can select the courses you want to take. You can register online during the appropriate dates (see the Registration Calendar included on our website). Questions concerning registration eligibility and procedures should be addressed to the Registrar's Office.

All students can self-register for Summer Session courses online using the BUSI registration system from March 10 until May 29. After May 29, you must come to the Registrar's Office (SW-119) to register for courses or make changes in your schedule. The hours for the Registrar's Office are Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. (beginning May 19, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.).

If you are currently a Binghamton University student, once you have paid for courses you may simply proceed to the BUSI Web Center (http://busi.binghamton.edu) to register.

If you are a new student, you will need to be admitted, pay for courses, and satisfy all health requirements (http://health.binghamton.edu/newstudents.htm) before being allowed to register via the BUSI registration system.

Additionally, all new students are required to complete an online Student Code of Conduct Acknowledgment (the initial part of the registration process) before being allowed to register for classes. New students should plan to visit to the Registrar's Office to obtain an ID card and PAC (Personal Access Code) before using the online registration system.

All students must pay for courses before they can register. Students can pay in person at the Student Accounts Office (SW-117) or by mail using the 2008 Summer Session Payment Form The Student Accounts Office is open Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. (after May 19, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.).

After May 29, mail completed forms and payment to:

Student Accounts Office
Binghamton University
PO Box 6003
Binghamton, New York 13902-6003

The Registrar's Office will notify you via email when your mail-in registration is completed.

Some courses require permission of the instructor or department before you can be registered and are so noted in the Schedule of Classes. You cannot register for these courses online. Instead, you should go to the department office to inquire about registering. For mail-in registration for these courses, you should mail the Course Registration Form to the Student Accounts Office (see address above). If you register by mail, you should allow sufficient time for the approval, forwarding and processing of the forms prior to published deadlines.

It may be possible to add a course after the published deadline, but you must complete a Late Add Petition form, get approval signatures from the course instructor and/or the appropriate dean's office and pay a $15 Late Add Fee to the Student Accounts Office. You can get the Late Add Petition from the appropriate dean's or advising office (The Harpur College Late Add Petition is available online at http://harpur-advising.binghamton.edu). If the late add is approved, you must take it to the Student Accounts Office, where you pay the Late Add Fee and then to the Registrar's Office for processing.

Under no circumstances is credit granted to students not properly registered in a course for credit.

Auditors

Students may audit a course with the consent of the instructor. The instructor determines the regulations for participation by auditors. Students who take a course as an auditor may not receive credit for it later unless they retake the course. A student must file a Course Audit Petition and be approved to audit any course. Audit forms are obtained from the Registrar's Office. Completed audit forms must be submitted to the Registrar's Office by the add deadline of the specific term of Summer Session.

Auditors must follow the registration procedures described above and make appropriate tuition and fee payments.

Credit Limits

Students may not register for more than eight credits in either Term I or Term II, excluding physical education credits. The maximum number of credits for which a student may register during the combined terms of the entire Summer Session is 16, excluding physical education credits. Exceptions to these credit limits are few and must be approved by the academic advisers of the appropriate school for undergraduate students, and by the Graduate School for graduate students. All courses carry four credits unless otherwise noted. Full-time status for entire Summer Session is 12 credits.

Please note: Harpur College policy does not permit students to overload during the Summer Session. Harpur academic advisors cannot grant exceptions to this policy.

Dropping a Course, Withdrawing from a Course or Withdrawing from the University

Students who wish their records to indicate good standing when dropping a course, withdrawing from a course or withdrawing from the University must follow formal drop and withdrawal procedures. Mere absence from class does not constitute due notice of drop or withdrawal. Students who stop attending a course for which they are registered are liable for payment unless the proper drop or withdrawal forms are submitted.

In general, any Summer Session student may drop a course up until the published drop deadline (see Registration Calendar). Students wishing to withdraw from a course should refer to the withdrawal information listed below for proper procedures and term deadlines.

Students wishing to withdraw from all their courses for the Summer Session must come into the Registrar's Office to drop their courses before the drop deadline or must process Late Drop Petitions after the drop deadline. Students may withdraw from the University up to the last day of classes for the Summer Session.

Independent Study, Internships, Thesis and Dissertation Courses

Students enrolling in non-classroom courses such as independent study, thesis and dissertation research, etc., must register for these courses by the appropriate dates. The last day to add non-classroom courses without an add fee is July 10. The last day to pay for non-classroom courses without incurring a late payment fee is June 17.
